Shabbat in Haifa

Candle lighting in Haifa (30 minutes before sunset on Hebcal), the religious neighbourhoods, Russian- and English-speaking communities, what runs on Shabbat and what doesn't, and the gaps I couldn't fill.

3 min readChecked 5 October 2026

Shabbat in Haifa looks different from neighbourhood to neighbourhood. Kiryat Shmuel closes its streets to traffic, Ahuza and Neve Sha'anan have dozens of shuls, and down the hill some buses keep running. Here's what I found, and what I didn't.

Candle lighting

The Shabbat page shows candle lighting 30 minutes before sunset. That's the time Hebcal uses for Haifa: its standard is 18 minutes, with 40 for Jerusalem and 30 for Haifa and Zichron Ya'akov. For Friday 9 October 2026, Hebcal gives candle lighting at 17:44 and havdalah at 18:50 in Haifa. The Haifa Religious Council doesn't publish its own minutes; it links to the government's Shabbat-times page. If your shul gives a different time, follow your shul.

The religious neighbourhoods

These descriptions come from a dated Beit Ole page, so treat the numbers as rough:

  • Ahuza: 22 Orthodox shuls, a Conservative and a Reform synagogue, a state-religious primary school (Netiv Eliezer-Carmel) and a Bnei Akiva branch, with a "modern Orthodox flavour" and a wide range of observance.
  • Neve Sha'anan: the other large religious community, with many English speakers and western olim, about 15 shuls, the Rambam complex (school, library, eight shuls), two mikvaot and a hesder yeshiva.
  • Kiryat Shmuel: a self-contained religious community of about 8,000 people that doesn't allow traffic through the neighbourhood on Shabbat.
  • Hadar: many Haredi communities (including Vizhnitz Hasidim), some modern Orthodox congregations, a mikveh and a garin torani of young religious families.

Communities by language and stream

  • Russian-speaking: the Chabad Russian Jewish Community Center at 56 Herzl St holds daily, Shabbat and holiday prayers; Kabbalat Shabbat starts at candle-lighting time. The Chabad directory lists more than 25 Chabad centres in Haifa.
  • English-speaking roots: Maor Yehuda in Ramat Almogi is an Orthodox community founded in 1978 by immigrants from English-speaking countries, Switzerland and France; Shabbat Shacharit 08:15 (from a community directory).
  • Students: the Technion's Ohel Aharon synagogue has weekday, Shabbat and holiday prayers; JLIC runs classes and Shabbat meals, and a Chabad house just outside campus offers Friday night meals.
  • Conservative and Reform: Kehilat Moriah in Ahuza describes itself as the oldest Conservative congregation in Israel and offers free membership to unemployed new immigrants; Ohel Avraham is the Reform congregation at the Leo Baeck centre.

All shuls in the directory.

What runs on Shabbat

  • The Carmelit doesn't: it closes at 15:00 on Friday and reopens after Shabbat (20:00 in summer, 19:00 in winter).
  • Selected bus lines do run, and the Metronit's line 5A runs on a modified route.
  • The municipal WhatsApp hotline doesn't operate on Shabbat, but phone line 106 runs 24 hours.
  • HaShaket beach is mixed on Shabbat (separate days are Sun to Fri). The Hai-Bar Carmel reserve opens to the public on Saturdays and holidays only. Haifa Museums (Art, City, Tikotin, Maritime) open on Saturday 10:00-16:00.

The gaps

I want to be honest about what's missing:

  • Eruv: I found no public source for Haifa's eruvin or their status. Ask your shul.
  • Shul lists and nusach: the Religious Council's site has no shul list, so I haven't listed ordinary neighbourhood shuls or their nusach.
  • Mikvaot: the hours I have come from a community directory last updated between 2013 and 2019. Call ahead.

If you know your neighbourhood's eruv, your shul's English or Russian minyan, or a mikveh's current hours, please send me a correction.
